Kobo Aura H2O: Review

Highlight in the world of e-book readers is not easy considering that we always have Amazon in mind with their references. However, the new Kobo Aura H2O from Rakuten – also a giant of online shopping, in this case.

Kobo Aura H2O: Design

The first thing that catches the eye when picking up this ebook reader is precisely its weight: very light, only 207 grams, and with a size of 129 x 172 x 8.8 millimeters make it a comfortable companion and easily transportable for the hours of public transport.

In its front design, highlights the logo of the house, No buttons. All the protagonism takes the touch screen of 6.8 inches with electronic ink (1,430 x 1,080 pixels of resolution, 265 dpi). A screen that differentiates between day and night and adapts the necessary light automatically. In the back also the mark appears but stands out the button of on and off in blue color. The touch is slightly rough, which prevents it from slipping out of your hands or attaching to accessories more easily. In the lower bezel we find the micro-USB port.

When we turn on the device, Kobo Aura H2O, we find a cover where we can see a selection of books already pre-installed. These can be added up to 6,000 ebooks thanks to the internal memory of 4 GB or 8 GB that incorporates the device. A storage more than enough to read virtually a lifetime.

At this point, we would like to emphasize an anecdote. Initially, when we tried to include a book in the reader, we tried it with a program of management of ebooks type Caliber. However, the Kobo Aura H2O was not recognized by the software. A fact that made us think that including books was going to be a problem when having to change them in format. Nothing further from reality since it can be used as a USB. Dragging directly onto the device will include the files without having to do anything else. Among the formats allowed are the most usual: EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI … and we will not have problems when including books bought in third party stores, protected by DRM (except Amazon).

In addition to opening virtually any text format, it has native support for CBZ and CBR, used in comics, PDF and JPEG, GIF, BMP or PNG images (although, as with any similar device, it is not its forte).

An off-road reader

There are two of the characteristics that we must emphasize the Kobo Aura H2O is precisely its resistance to water (one meter up to 30 minutes with all the protectors on). Well it is true that we are not going to read diving, it is more than reassuring to know that if we go to the pool and want to read, nothing will happen when a child pumps next to us. It is also ready to withstand sand or dust. In either case, the device will warn you that it is wet or ax and is recommended to be cleaned or dried but can be followed with reading without problems.

In addition, its ComfortLight PRO technology makes the screen not look blue. A factor that makes night reading more comfortable. And indeed, the view gets a lot less tired which is appreciated for those who come with factory default in the eyes. However, if we have to value everything on the screen, it is true that its tactile function may fail sometimes if we do not do well in the established area although, overall, our experience has been positive.

For lovers of personalization, the reader also features curious features. 11 different fonts to avoid the traditional Times New Roman and 24 sizes of text. In addition, you can set the thickness of the margins, page orientation or even, how we want to know the progress information of the book. Also noteworthy is the dictionary option, especially useful when reading in other languages.

As for its autonomy we cannot put any but while the manufacturer claims that Kobo Aura H2O can last up to 2 months, what we can say with a daily use of an average of one hour is for almost three weeks, only half of the load has been consumed so we are on track. The Kobo Aura H20 also has a Wi-Fi function so we can connect to download books directly or make queries.

In general terms we are before an e-book reader who has well deserved the good note; for its quality, autonomy and ease of use. However, its price is from 159.90 euros- is a bit above the price marked by other competitors are equal or better.
