Performance analysis of AMD RYZEN 7 1700 versus Intel Core i7 7820X

The AMD RYZEN 7 1700 and Core i7 7820X processors have very similar specifications, so much that we can consider them practically almost direct rivals, although by capacity and characteristics of the platform its full rival will be the AMD Threadripper 1900X.

AMD RYZEN 7 1700

Hardware Unboxed did not want to miss the opportunity to make an interesting comparative of both processors and the results are very interesting, but before going to analyze them we will review the specifications and the price of these two CPUs:

AMD RYZEN 7 1700:

  • Eight cores and sixteen wires at 3 GHz-3.7 GHz, normal and turbo mode.
  • 16 MB of L3 cache.
  • 65 watt TDP.
  • Price: 375 dollars.

Intel Core i7 7820X:

  • Eight cores and sixteen wires at 3.6 GHz-4.3 GHz, normal and turbo mode.
  • 11 MB of L3 cache.
  • TDP 140 watts.
  • Price: 770 dollars.

As we see the specifications of both are very similar but its price is very different, since the Intel processor costs more than double the AMD option. Is that great difference in price justified with an agreed performance? The answer is a resounding no.

In the performance tests in games we can clearly see that at stock frequencies and with RAM at 2666 MHz the AMD RYZEN 7 1700 is below the Core i7 7820X, but when DDR4 memories are used at 3,200 MHz and the processor is uploaded at 4 GHz Manages to overcome in more than one occasion the solution of Intel, even though that one is overclocked to 4.5 GHz.

Both processors show an overall performance almost identical, saving the differences that in some tests marks the memory support in quadruple channel of Core i7 7820X.

Finally in the results of consumption it is confirmed that the RYZEN is more efficient than the processor of Intel. We can make clear from this comparison that the AMD option offers a much higher value for money, and also a better performance per watt.
