The Moto G5S was officially launched yesterday as an improved version of the Moto G5. However, the truth is that perhaps it might not be a much better smartphone. In fact, it’s not much better. Are you going to buy a new mobile? Comparison: Moto G5 vs Moto G5S.
Moto G5 vs Moto G5S: No improvement in performance
Neither better processor nor better RAM. The Moto G5S is almost the same as the Moto G5 in terms of smartphone performance. In both cases the mobiles have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 eight-core processor is capable of reaching a clock frequency of 1.4 GHz. Actually, it is a low-end processor, or economical mid-range. Of course, while the Moto G5 was available in two versions, with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory and with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, the Moto G5S is available in a single version, with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory. In any case, the two mobiles are very similar.
Moto G5 vs Moto G5S: Almost same camera and same screen
There are also not very relevant improvements for the camera and the screen of the smartphone. Yes it is true that the new Moto G5S has a screen of 5.2 inches. The Moto G5 had a 5-inch screen. In any case, the resolution of the screen is Full HD of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels in both smartphones, and in no case are mobile with a large format screen.
The camera was 12 megapixels in the case of the Moto G5 and 13 megapixels in the case of the Moto G5S. However, there is no more data on the camera confirming that it is a higher quality camera than the Moto G5, so in fact we can conclude that cameras are very similar in both cases.
Moto G5 vs Moto G5S: Better design, and more battery
Perhaps the few improvements of the Moto G5S are in the design and in the battery. The smartphone has a design made of metallic monohull. But was not the Moto G5 metallic? Not really. It only had a casing of a metal and plastic alloy. Now it is an aluminum monocoque, and it is so because it has the antennas on the outside of the housing, iPhone style, which avoid the effect Faraday cage generated by the metal structures.
The battery is 3000 mAh, which is 200 mAh more battery than the older one. But it will not offer much more autonomy because the somewhat larger screen will consume more power, and the chances are that the autonomy of the two phones is the same.
However, the Moto G5S has NFC, and the Moto G5 does not. Now that the payment platform Android Payments has been launched, and that Samsung Pay could be launched for the rest of mobile phones that are not Samsung, it could be something to take into account to be able to make mobile payments.
The Moto G5S has a price of about 295 dollars, while the price of the Moto G5 is about 236 dollars. With that difference in price, the truth is that, in my opinion, the Moto G5 is still a better option to be a similar smartphone, but with a cheaper price. However, the fact that the Moto G5S is compatible with Android Pay payment platforms and in the future with Samsung Pay could be relevant if these platforms begin to be compatible with more banking entities.
