Very soon the series processors Intel Skylake-X will go on public sale. The network is already beginning to appear the first tests of performance chipset family. A few days ago the authoritative edition of Hexus and Bit-Tech despite the ban on non-disclosure has published a review of the opening line of 10-core processor Intel Core i9-7900X (models with 12, 14, 16 and 18 will be released later kernels). During the test chip shown very mixed results.
The CPU tests showed his best side. Intel Core i9-7900X coped with both single-threaded and multithreaded scenarios with. Chipset cost of $ 999 easily overtaken as a precursor in the face of 10-core Core i7-6950X cost $ 1700, and all involved in the testing of the model AMD Ryzen.
Memory tests of Intel Core i9-7900X also went quite well. In some aspects, the 10-core innovation has given way to some models Core i7 (and even Core i3 and i5), but generally kept quite well.
As for the graphics, here in Core i9 problems begin. Checking in 3DMark and VRMark shown that the processor is clearly losing the Core i7. However, to make any firm conclusions until early. In the same VRMark Core i9 test originally scored only 4015 points, and later – already 10191 points.
A weakness of the Core i9-7900X, as well as any processor with six or more cores is gaming performance. However, contrary to expectations, the new Intel processor showed acceptable results. In Deus Ex games: Mankind Divided and Hitman chipset showed his best side. But with Total War: Warhammer everything turned out much worse: Core i9 conceded almost all the participants of testing, even dual-core Core i3-7350K. Of course, all the models of Core i7 and i5, as well as most members of the family of AMD Ryzen coped with this task much better news.
The second shortcoming of Intel Core i9-7900X became unnecessarily high power consumption under load. During the test, the conversion of video platform based on Core i9-7900X consumed 214 watts, while the Core i7 platform took only 132 watts. In games, “nine” consumes less Core i7-6950X and Ryzen 7 1800X, but still the Core i9 indicators are very high.
The acceleration of the novelty, as, indeed, and all Intel processors are also fine. All ten nuclei were able to work with a frequency of 4.7 GHz at a voltage of 1.25 V (cooling – Noctua NH-215S).
But there is a downside: testers noted that when the voltage to 1.3 V processor temperature exceeds 100 degrees Celsius. It did not help even liquid cooling system EVGA CLC 280.
Results of Intel Core i9-7900X checks really are very variable. On the one hand, in most tests, the new chipset is faster than the same Core i7-6950X at significantly lower cost. On the other hand, the new product is not only conceded predecessor in a number of important aspects, but also consumes much more energy with identical TDP.
