Lenovo Yoga 920 transformer 2018 laptop: Review & Updates

At IFA 2017, Lenovo launched the updated transformer Lenovo Yoga 920. And, here’s the review of the new beast!

Design, equipment:

Lenovo Yoga 920 Transformer

At first glance, concerning Yoga 910, in 920 there are practically no external changes. The model comes in a beautiful box of a familiar design – two “covers” recline inside and the laptop rises slightly, to be closer to the user. The bundle of sales versions will include a compact power supply and a stylus that recognizes 4096 degrees of depression.

Unboxing:

The box is now not white, but colorful, the palette of colors available for the laptop has also changed. You can choose from the usual silver, bronze, and copper.

The corporate hinge has not changed, and the materials of the case remain the same – everywhere metal, only the screen is covered with glass. Dimensions and weight also remained the same – we do not take into account the difference in grams and fractions of millimeters.

The Yoga 920 worked a little over the shape of the case – if you look at the closed laptop, now it looks like an inverted trapezoid. The characteristic protrusions on the faces disappeared, but the feeling of a weighty piece of metal with island edges remained.

Specifications & Ergonomics:

The chosen form factor dictates the convenience of using many notebooks. Yoga 920 is a transformer, and if there is a desire to use the device for presentations or as a huge tablet, then all its four modes of operation will come in handy. Personally, after testing a few such notebooks, I appreciated only the modes of “tent” and “stand” – Yoga is convenient to install on a small table (for example, in an airplane).

The minimum thickness of the case is also a plus, but because of this, most manufacturers are gradually abandoning the usual ports. In the Yoga 920, their set has not changed: two Type-C (charging, USB 3.0 and 3.1, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort), one conventional USB 3.0 with the ability to recharge gadgets, mini-jack for headphones or headsets.

If you are accustomed to using the built-in card reader, you will either need to update the accessories or buy some kind of universal dock, although there is no claim to support of the standards – Type-C in Yoga 920 seems really universal. It’s not very convenient that the stylus holder is offered to be installed in a single USB Type-A, and the pen will block access to the power key.

In general, the laptop is quite convenient to use. The company did not forget about the little things like a small notch on the lid for easy deployment, the web camera in Yoga 920 is located above the display, and not under it as before, while the width of the frames remains the same.

The laptop can be opened with one hand, but somewhere on the 80-85 degree opening the hinge moves harder and you have to hold the bottom part.

Keyboard and Touchpad:

Probably, you already guessed that, in the case of input authorities, the changes also need to be looking for in detail. In Yoga 920, as well as in all notebooks of the 20 series, the company corrected the shortage of the past generations – the unfortunate location of the right Shift, which caused permanent errors with blind typing. Now the key is full-sized and is in its place – for this a little-stitched arrows.

Before Yoga 920, I used a ThinkPad laptop and a Matebook X from Huawei, so in the early days, the keyboard for “yoga” seemed to me not the most convenient. The keys have a small stroke, the size of the buttons is slightly less than the standard one. However, you quickly get used to it – after a few days of work, everything becomes familiar.

There is a backlight with two levels of brightness, on the right is an excellent fingerprint scanner. We also did not have any remarks on the touchpad. In general, everything is done at a good level.

Screen:

Lenovo Yoga 920 is equipped with a 13.9-inch touch screen IPS. Available configurations with a different resolution matrix – from Full HD to 4K (UHD). We tested the first, “most simple” option.

The matrix (AUO303D B139HAN03.0) is characterized by an extended color gamut, normal, though not ideal calibration and a slight bias in warm tones. The brightness varies from 1 to 283 cd / m², the measured contrast is 1 to 1664.

Between the glass and the matrix there is no air gap, so the glossy screen does not shine very much. The sensor recognizes finger presses well, collects the average number of prints. To summarize, it can be said that the display in the laptop is excellent, the company did not forget even the sensor for automatic brightness control.

Platform, battery, noise and sound

The Yoga 920 is equipped with 8th-generation Intel Core processors and fast SSD M.2 (PCI Express). Test configuration: Intel Core i5-8250U, 12 GB DDR4 and drive Samsung MZVLW256HEHP volume of 256 GB.

Even without tests it is clear that with these characteristics the laptop should work perfectly, which is confirmed by the experience. Separately, we note that even an SSD of minimum volume has excellent speed indicators – this is good for the overall responsiveness of the system. The results of other benchmarks on a platform-usual level.

One of the features of all flagship Yoga was a very capacious battery. In the Yoga 920 nothing has changed – inside the battery is hidden at 78 W * h, so the company promises up to 15.5 hours of operation for models with Full HD screen and up to 10.8 hours for devices with 4K displays.

We tested the sample, and in our case, the Yoga 920 (Full HD) worked an average of 7-9 hours on one battery charge, depending on the mode of use, screen brightness, and other factors. Compared to many ultrabooks, this is a pretty good result, although it does not fully match our expectations regarding battery capacity.

Regarding the cooling system, the transformer pleased. In normal use (working in the browser, communicating in instant messengers or watching video) fans are almost not audible, and the case remains a little warm.

Under a high load, the noise level can be described as average, it does not irritate, and constantly high loading occurs only in specific tasks.

Multimedia capabilities of the laptop are implemented at the level. On the bottom are stereo speakers JBL c setting Dolby. They turned out quite loud, and the sound quality by the standards of laptops is good.

PROS: design and materials; an excellent screen with thin frames; Fingerprint’s scanner; keyboard and touchpad; platform and fast SSD; good working time; equipment

CONS: THE price; there is no card reader; stylus mount

The verdict: Lenovo Yoga 920 is an excellent example of the implementation of the flagship transformer. Past Yoga, too, were good, but this time the company was able to correct minor flaws of old models and did not add new ones. All this coincided with the release of a new generation of Intel Core chips that have become much more productive than their predecessors, so Yoga 920 is ready to offer improvements “on all fronts.” The drawbacks of the model as a whole are typical for all flagship notebooks and the class of transformers, so for a real buyer they will not play an important role.
