Nokia revealed the Nokia 8 Android flagship in the month of August, and it has gained enough confidence in the market, but it is really worth to buy? Let’s find!
The release of the current flagship of Nokia (HMD) took place back in August, and the sale of the device started in September. Smartphone got not the best display, metal case, dual camera and top “stuffing”.
Since the Nokia brand has returned to the market, under it are produced models of two types: Android-smartphones and ordinary “dialers.” The company even tried to reincarnate the legendary Nokia 3310.
The company HMD (Nokia) was not afraid to compete with the giants and the flagship smartphone equipped with the best components to date, supported the trend of dual cameras, finalized a couple of branded “chips”, quickly released an update to Android 8 … And the price in our latitudes was appropriate. But everything is in order.
The box of the flagship does not differ from cheaper models. And with a smartphone, the user will receive a headset with removable ear pads of different sizes, a cable (USB-A to USB-C), a charger and a branded clip. Standard set of the modern flagship. Now it’s quite timely to immediately pay attention to the presence of a standard 3.5-millimeter connector, no adapter or specific accessory is needed to connect both complete and customary headphones.
The first thing that made a smartphone, having access to Wi-Fi, it offered to upgrade to Android 8, which I immediately agreed. The feeling that the device has good components, appears instantly, because everything works very quickly. I think that those who upgrade from weaker smartphones, it will be very noticeable, and for those accustomed to flagships, discomfort is not expected. As for the resurgent brand, the first impressions are excellent.
Design and usability
Externally, Nokia 8 is very similar to the previous models. That is, there is continuity of design. Multi-colored versions of the case have not gone anywhere: there is a usual matte grey, polished/glossy orange (Copper), and blue in the version with a matte or glossy finish. I think it’s obvious that only matte versions will be practical here, and to preserve the appearance of “shiny” models a cover will be required.
Our version of the matte blue case looks good. All colour variants are made of a single piece of aluminium (series 6000). If the iPhone 6 is “famous” for bending (and then using the same metal), then for Nokia 8 you can not worry. The only traces of use that could be in our sample are fingerprints. There are no minor damages on the test sample. However, with the falls all the more difficult, because the display is large, and on the metal, there will be traces of blows. The apparatus itself is rather slippery, that’s why it’s better not to neglect the case. On and without this a rather large size (151.5 × 73.7 × 7.9 mm, 160 grams) it will not affect the best way.
On the bottom and top of the body, there are plastic inserts covering the antennas, but they are practically invisible. On the right are the only mechanical buttons (volume on and off) that gleam beautifully polished faces. In the left side, a Sim-card tray and a memory card are hidden (using which, you will have to abandon the second Sim). At the bottom is the main speaker, microphone and USB-C, and on the top is a headset jack.
On the front side of the display are pretty large frames on which it was possible to place wonderful front speakers, but the manufacturer thought differently. So under the display was a fingerprint scanner and two touch buttons. The scanner is slightly recessed into the case; it is easy to find it, although it is not very convenient, depending on the position of the smartphone in hand. Neighboring buttons with backlight. On the back, there is a glass “pedestal” with flashing faces, on which both cameras are located, an IR sensor and a double flash.
Such a smartphone can hardly be called a nominee for “best design”, although it looks relatively good. But with competitive flagships to compare it, it seems to me; there is no point. He will lose both externally and practically because unlike other flagships, he does not even know how to dive underwater (IP54 will not surprise anyone).
As for a large case, the diagonal of the screen is not large – 5.3 inches. In any case, this is enough for any task, although the hull really could be a little smaller. But for fans of high pixel density, there is remarkable news, because the display resolution is 2560 × 1440 pixels, 554 ppi. Cover the matrix glass Gorilla Glass 5 with the popular 2.5D-effect.
IPS-matrix occupies the display. It is well calibrated but slightly deflected towards cold shades. This is seen in a direct comparison. Such a deviation is quite acceptable and imperceptible in everyday use. And for the evening there is an appropriate mode, which makes the picture warmer. Globally, it’s hard to find fault with the screen; the image is excellent. It is good to view photos and videos, and even more so to read and perform all other everyday tasks.
The maximum brightness should cope with direct sunlight, but the sensor does not always fall into comfortable limits. To work of a touch layer not to carp. Oleophobic coating is also in place. To all the manufacturer added time, date, battery charge indicator and display of notifications of calls, messages and mail on the display off. Naturally, for this purpose, the entire display is highlighted a little, and to save a charge it does not burn all the time. But the battery reserve for this function is enough.
The main speaker is only one, and when playing music or video, the speaker does not help it. The sound is average, it’s not bad, but it’s far from what can be heard from the flagships of A-brands. Maybe for music, this is not the best solution, because the desired volume does not have a sound, but for video clips from the Web, it is suitable. You can listen to music even on a standard headset, the quality of which, although inferior to the music brands, is nevertheless very good, both for the complete set. Also, headphones are comfortable, which is important.
The power and quality of the conversational dynamics are enough to talk near the road. And since the smartphone has three microphones, you can not survive the transfer of voice.
Performance and Software
For the speed of work here meets the standard for the current flagships eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 with Adreno 540 and 4 GB of RAM. A 64 GB storage can be expanded with a memory card, but in that case, you will have to sacrifice a second SIM card. It is accompanied by all necessary sensors, including Bluetooth 5.0, AC Wi-Fi with MIMO support, as well as NFC.
Obviously, it works very quickly. Performance for the eyes is enough for everything that is on Google Play. The system itself is also running at lightning speed. And it does not matter how many applications are running in the background; nothing slows down the smartphone. Synthetic tests just confirm this once again. Of course, opening a video on YouTube and simultaneously reading the news feed / social networking for a smartphone is also not a problem. Like games. This all does not even warm the case.
As already mentioned, once the first configuration on the device, Android 8.0 arrives. Installation does not take much time. The system is virtually untouched, which fans will appreciate the “pure” Android’a. Third-party applications and four calendars, for example, will not be either. Moreover, the company is constantly talking about rapid updates, which so far is confirmed by actions.
For this size of the case and the display, the battery capacity can also be called standard – 3090 mAh. The test of autonomy Geekbench worked 7:30, and PCMark whole 10:40. In daily use at five hours of work on the screen a day, before going to bed, I had 30-40% of the charge, which is a very good reserve for such energy consumption. At the same time, I did not limit myself to anything while using the device.
On full charge from the complete memory, it is necessary to allocate about two hours, which is slightly faster than usual, but not as fast as it is for competitors. There is no wireless support for the smartphone.
On the front side, there is a window with a 13-megapixel module with aperture f / 2.0. The main camera consists of two sensors with the same resolution and aperture, only one is conventional with optical stabilization, and the second one is monochrome. They are complemented by a double flash and an infrared sensor to determine the distance. Naturally, there is also the Carl Zeiss logo.
On the one hand, as for Nokia, the camera is good, but it will not be able to compete with top competitors. You can take a good shot, but sometimes it will take more time than I would like. Misses in focusing forced to review the pictures on the spot, and it is better to do several at once. With moving objects, the camera does poorly. And in conditions of insufficient illumination (in the evening), it is possible to see the overexposed elements (bulbs, lanterns), and the moving objects will be completely smeared.
From “bells and whistles” there is a mode of Live Bokeh and, certainly, a black-and-white mode (as, for example, at Huawei). The camera blurs the background rather roughly, and this will require a lot of light, which is not always available. It is much more interesting to get black-and-white photographs, but, as practice shows, to have an individual sensor for this purpose is not so necessary.
The video, although you can shoot in 4K resolution, its quality will not be the best. There is also a slow-motion video mode, but only in HD-resolution and without the ability to adjust the deceleration in certain moments (the whole video will be “slow”).
The front camera will not surprise. In the room, it will be difficult. But she comfortably enough angle of coverage for a couple of people.
The camera application is quite simple, but not very fast. The camera needs some time to start and focus, switching between modes also takes a second or two. But everything is conveniently grouped, there is a manual mode of settings and an interesting recording mode from both cameras (main and front), but personally, I have never seen anyone use similar solutions from other smartphones. There is also an opportunity to stream video directly to Facebook or YouTube.
PROS of Nokia 8:
Good build, display, excellent performance, Android 8.0, battery
Cons of Nokia 8:
In classical colours it looks very simple, the case is not the most convenient to use, the cameras are far behind their competitors
In general, the model of Nokia 8 was good. With the low-key appearance, the smartphone received a high-quality display and excellent performance. But when you take into account the cost, there are too many other smartphones that will sound better; they will be able to dive into the water, they will be better to shoot and sound. Not to mention design, although this is a subjective factor.
